From the desk of Mayor Fiandt:
I was asked at a council meeting if it was possible to raise chickens in the city limits. Since that meeting, others have inquired as well. Currently this is not permitted but I would like to know how others feel about this issue. If we do decide to change the current ordinance we should consider what other farm animals this could open the door for.
Another topic of discussion has been dogs and where they are permitted. Currently in Garrett it is not permissible to walk dogs in the downtown area as well as some of the parks, with the exceptions of a service dog, dogs with uniformed officers or a licensed dog trainer. When I inquired as to why the City even had the ordinance it was explained to me that several people were frightened by some dogs that seemed aggressive as they were being walked downtown as well as dog owners that didn’t clean up after their pets. No one wants pet waste on our sidewalks. Those who think that Garrett is not a dog friendly city must remember that you can walk your dog most anywhere with the exception of downtown and a few parks but that leaves a lot of the city to still walk. Plus, there is a park on the north side, Ocker Park, that has a dog run and a big area for your dogs to run and exercise.
If people are interested in seeing these ordinances changed or just supporting keeping them as they are, I would greatly appreciate your feedback. Several ways to state your opinion on these matters are available. Dropping a note at City Hall or in the mail in care of Garrett Mayor, 130 S. Randolph St., Garrett, IN 46738. There will also be a poll on the Facebook page. This is ‘We the People’ not just myself making this decision. We have a great community and we are always working to make it better and to do that, we need everyone’s help and support.
